UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema says his party looks forward to full implementation and adherence of what has been agreed upon in yesterday’s meeting between political party leaders and the church.

In a statement, Mr. Hichilema thanked everyone for the positive deliberations and outcome of the meeting.

“We have just concluded today’s church mother bodies convened meeting for political parties which was aimed at addressing various national issues, especially the rising violence in the country,” Mr. Hichilema stated.

“The meeting was held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross from this (Tuesday ) afternoon. We thank everyone for the positive deliberations and outcome of the meeting and a communique has since been issued. We now look forward to full implementation and adherence of what has been agreed by all parties, especially on ending violence, reforming the Public Order Act and it’s application, conduct of public media, and other issues.”

Mr. Hichilema said his party was grateful to the church who for a longtime have played a key role in ensuring that Zambia’s democracy is protected and flourishes.

“This is not the first time that the Church has seen the need to call for such a meeting especially in view of the deteriorating political situation,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema thanked the church and hoped that his party would see a more acceptable political environment that promoted and safeguarded Zambia’s young democracy.

Zambia receives long awaited Technology (Smart Genset), Technology Ends Load Shedding

$

Local technology provider, Kaystech Gensets, offers light at the end of the tunnel as Zambia grapples with its worst power crisis after it launched the country’s first low cost smart super silent power generators – the NUT and ELEMAX series.

In recent months, Zambia has seen a rapid increase in investment in alternative power sources as businesses and domestic households struggle against daily power outages commonly known as “load-shedding” – power rationing implemented by state owned utility company, ZESCO.

The loud drone of a diesel and/or petrol power generator set (genset) has become a familiar sound in both residential and trading areas around the country as citizens scramble to keep the lights on amid blackouts. While an ordinary genset is a convenient alternative power source, the noise and occasional oil leaks make them less than ideal for quiet neighbourhoods and office premises.

“The problem with the current make of gensets flooding the market is that they lack adequate silencers hence they are extremely loud” says Innocent Pumulo, a Lusaka based mechanic. He adds that the ‘basic’ design of the engines running most units make them inefficient in terms of fuel consumption and unable to operate for extended periods of time. “They are prone to break downs. I service four to six units each day because of the same,” he explains.

Kaystech GensetsThis has put a strain on the finances of most businesses and individual households. The high cost of solar power systems means that conventional gensets remain the most commonly used source of alternative energy for many Zambians despite their obvious flaws.
However, with the launch of the NUT brand by Kaystech, residential and business communities alike are set for some much needed respite. The products carry a compact design which makes them easy on the eyes, are lightweight for easy carriage and are some of the most fuel efficient models to date.

An ultra-modern control centre with enhanced Do-It-Yourself (DIY) capability and cutting-edge silencer technology on the units along with other innovations puts them among the most technologically advanced generators of their kind. They are virtually inaudible beyond a seven metre radius.

The ELEMAX series promise high performance as well as enhanced portability. A rugged design coupled with their HONDA manufactured engines ensures durability and efficiency even in the harshest working environments.

The products from Kaystech boast long operating hours of up to 12 hours on a single tank. Kaystech Gensets Representative, George Munuka says the company is committed to make certain it plays its part in fostering sustainable growth among SMEs by making state-of-the-art technologies continuously available on the market. “Kaystech has been a pioneering supplier of cutting-edge technology on the local market for nearly a decade now” he says.

workers“We have fought hard as a company to harness that experience and see to it that even through the darkness cast by the power crisis, our fellow Zambians can benefit from the technological progress offered by this new generation of Genset. Our business model is set up in such a way that it not only ensures sustainable growth for the business but also enables us to provide a reliable and personalised service to our customers. This is why we have introduced the new products at such low prices because we believe everyone deserves access to the very best that technology has to offer even in these tough economic times. These machines are arguably some of the best solutions to the current crisis gripping our power sector – There is something for everyone.”

As load shedding continues to negatively affect businesses in Zambia, innovative technologies such as the kind introduced by Kaystech may prove to be the country’s greatest weapon against the scourge.

Chaminuka Wildlife Estate: Own a peice of Zambia’s finest Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Lusaka

0

The development of CWE aims to give Lusaka a vibrant new alternative residential heart with things to do for adults and children. Create a world-class wildlife estate development to complement the existing facilities at Chaminuka Lodge that will act as a catalyst for the upgrade and redevelopment of Lusaka east and to maximize the potential of the site’s prime location in the North Eastern part of Lusaka. Chaminuka will remain an oasis of parkland and a Nature Reserve.

The Land

Each plot is approximately one acre in size (4,000 square metres) and is fully serviced with electricity, water reticulation and accessed using an internal top-level gravel road network. The backbone grid for water and electricity has already been completed. Plots are arranged amphitheatrically, the focal feature being a lake. Communal protected parks and walking paths for residents to enjoy a total outdoor experience will surround this. And for your social life on the Southern shores of the lake, a boardwalk nestled into the forest will host a camouflaged restaurant, bar, spa, gym and infinity pool. Homeowners will create an association and appoint a management company. The management will be responsible for the running and maintenance of the Estate. Chaminuka Nature Reserve will continue to manage the wildlife. With your plot you will receive a copy of a homeowners constitution and architectural guidelines, both designed to optimize and enhance your existence with wildlife and nature. You will also have a choice of one of four architectural house designs. You are free to choose one or design one of your own liking. If you do choose the latter, CWE shall review your plans to ensure that consistent standards are maintained and that they conform to CWE’s Architectural Guidelines.

The  Home

“Each of the four homes has been designed to externally fuse or blend with the surrounding, unspoilt  environment.” As such emphasis has been placed on clean Lines, hidden roofs, river stone façade, and wooden pergolas. The architect’s brief was to “bring the outside, in”. This was achieved through the integration of open plans, high ceilings, corner windows, floor to ceiling glass and deep patios. Open plans allow for one room to flow into the next, in an effort to eventually enable every space to effortlessly flow outdoors, without the interruption of physical boundaries; high ceilings allow for seemingly more open rooms. Corner windows provide for 180° views outwards.

Floor to ceiling glass (doors and windows), bolstered by the inclusion of deep patios, create the seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. Deep patios act as transitional spaces that are both theoretically and functionally neither outside nor inside. They are intermediate spaces that allow the indoor to seamlessly and effortlessly merge with the outdoors. These design strategies also maximize the capture of natural light and ventilation to all spaces.

POLICE in Lusaka have concluded investigations in a case which was allegedly reported that a police officer was in a company of thieves that was about to rob a resident in john Laing. In a statement in Lusaka, Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that contrary to the assertions, the facts of the case are that on March 23, 2016 at about 02:00 hours in John Laing Compound, two officers; Sergeant Msimuko and Constable Joshua Kapanga accompanied by the complainant Janatu Tembo and his friend went to John Laing compound to apprehend two Hassan and Jacob who earlier in the day had been paid to supply Janatu Tembo of Chibolya Compound, with a television set worth nine hundred kwacha (K900.00).

“When the officers reached the accused’s place they knocked at the door. The two accused persons; Hassan and Jacob started shouting and calling for help that criminals were attacking them.Whilst there in John Laing people mobilized themselves and came in large numbers and challenged the officers,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.

“In the process they managed to disarm Constable Kapanga Joshua whom they beat up severely and decided to set him ablaze using a motor vehicle tyre. The instant justice mob further vented their anger at the officer’s vehicle which they damaged and vandalized.”
Mr. Hamoonga stated that quick response by the Lusaka Division Flying Squad saved both the officers and that the complainant from being set ablaze. He stated that the flying squad managed to retrieve the firearm and rushed the officer and the complainant to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for treatment. “They sustained multiple cuts on their hands and bodies. This incident happened on March 23, 2016 between 01:55 hours and 02:55 hours in John Laing Compound. The two victims have since been discharged and are now out of danger,” he stated.

Mr. Hamoonga warned members of the public to desist from attacking police officers that are legally authorized by law to maintain law and order in the republic.

He stated that an assault on one police officer who whilst enforcing a constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order was an assault on the entire police service.

Mr. Hamoonga stated that Police will not take lightly any attacks from members of the public.

CSO SUN says despite Zambia being blessed with abundant fish, people are still not consuming the commodity

CIVIL Society Scaling up Nutrition head of advocacy and communications Eneya Phiri says it is unfortunate that despite Zambia being blessed with abundant fish, people are still not consuming the commodity.

During a fish consumption awareness event in Siavonga recently, Mr. Phiri said while it was good for people to receive an income from the fish, it was also important for them to spare some for consumption.

“It is unfortunate that in spite of being blessed with massive natural resources like Kariba with abundant fish, people in Zambia are still not consuming this precious commodity. In Siavonga, you find that it is one of the main sources of income of the local fishermen. While we are happy that people are receiving an income from the fish, we would very much want to see a situation where they also spare some fish for consumption,” Mr. Phiri said.

“Not everything needs to be sold! We need to spare some fish to feed our homes. It is irresponsible to continue suffering from forms of malnutrition such as micronutrient deficiencies when we have an abundance of fish from which we can access these required nutrients.”

Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) has been between March 24 2016 and April 2 2016, conducting awareness campaigns in Chongwe and Siavonga districts on eating fish, especially small whole dried fish and disseminating information on the different ways to cook and store fish.

These campaigns were supported by SMARTfish through NFDS consultancy.

Mr. Phiri said CSO-SUN was concerned about the levels of malnutrition which were exceedingly high.

“Current national statistics show stunting (in children under the age of 5) to be at 40 per cent or 1.2 million children, wasting at 6 per cent, and high levels of combination of micronutrient deficiencies: 53 per cent of school-aged children are deficient in vitamin a while 46 per cent have iron deficiency. Recently, obesity rates have also been on the rise and are currently at 23 per cent in women alone,” Mr. Phiri said.

“This has severe negative consequences for the people of Zambia and ultimately the economic and political strength of our country will be compromised. Stunted children will contribute less to their communities and will eventually earn less as adults. In essence, malnutrition devalues human capital. This is why we have been urging all stakeholders to do what is right to curb malnutrition in Zambia. One way in which we can begin to address malnutrition is to diversify our diets. We have been in Siavonga and Chongwe for the past few days conducting awareness campaigns in the communities on the need for people include fish, particularly small fish or kapenta, in their diets to improve their nutritional status.”

Mr. Phiri said fish was one of the most nutritious foods that is locally available especially in lake districts such as Siavonga.
He said fish contained several nutrients such as proteins, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins all of which are very good for body and brain development.

Mr. Phiri said fish was especially good for the women, particularly preganant and breastfeeding women as its benefits directly go to the developing feotus.

“This is why the theme of the campaigns has been rightly named ‘a little fish goes a long way’ because we know the long term benefits of consuming fish. We wish to echo the words of President Edgar Lungu who lamented in August last year that it is criminal for Zambians to import nearly 45,000 tons of fish when we have plenty water bodies from which we can produce and consume our own indigenous fish,” Mr. Phiri said.

He said there was need to sensitise people to begin to include fish in their diets because it was a smart decision in order to secure the health and nutrition of the children.

“Additionally, we urge the government to put in place infrastructure to preserve fish for future consumption. If you talk to the fishermen, you realise that there is a lot of wastage of fish from the time that it is caught up to the point it reaches the final consumer. Over a period of time this translates to thousands of tons of fish wasted! As a country, we cannot afford to waste food at all. Currently we have a looming hunger situation where basic commodities have become so scarce and this has driven their prices up.
This is mostly as a result of not having the capacity to preserve our food. For example, we have had bumper harvests of maize consecutively for several years. But the one year when rainfall has been bad should result in looming hunger? That is unacceptable and a result of not having mechanisms to store food,” he said.

Mr. Phiri said the government needed to invest in simple, inexpensive technology that would aid in the storage of food.

He thanked SMARTfish and NFDS consultancy for their support in running the campaigns successfully in Chongwe and Siavonga. We urge all stakeholders to take keen interest in the health and cost benefits of fish so that together we can have healthy, vibrant nation,” said Mr. Phiri.

And Siavonga district fisheries officer Mebelo Wamulume said the government was committed to improving the nutrition status of the citizens.

“Young people need to consume fish day in and day out. The government of Zambia is currently repealing the National Nutrition Commission Act to align it with current fish demands. Currently we seem to be importing a lot of fish from China and yet we are endowed with vast water bodies which can help us improve the supply of fish within the country and the neighbouring countries,” Mr. Wamulume said.

“Professional smart phone users have a lack of choice when it comes to devices that meet their requirements,” he said.

“We have tried to keep this in mind when positioning the Mate 8. It is perfectly suited to business users with its large battery, super-efficient rapid charging, large screen and additional security features. Work life balance and increased productivity is what we wish for all our Mate 8 users.”

Li Mao added that Zambia has in recent years seen a high smartphone usage putting into consideration the growing consumer base that wants to be associated with premium products.

The Mate 8 also features advanced six-layer thermal mechanics, which allows higher heat dissipation, leading to an excellent handling experience and lower power consumption.

National Breweries commissions a USD 30 million Chibuku plant

NEW modern production facilities are set to boost efficiency at the National Breweries Chibuku plant that was officially opened by Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe on April 6,2016.

The U$30 million Lusaka plant is the most modern Chibuku plant in Africa and is the SABMiller Group’s largest investment in Chibuku to date across the continent.

The development is part of the group’s long-term investment plan in Zambia and aims to improve the product quality and production efficiency of the popular and affordable opaque beer brand.

Those efficiency gains will also result in greater production volumes and more business for small-scale farmer suppliers who provide the brewery with maize, thus bringing economic growth and national development, explained Managing Director Annabelle Degroot.

The new factory is set to increase capacity from 1 million hectolitres of Chibuku per year to 1.5 million hectolitres, with the option to expand further to 2.5 million hectolitres. Its staff of some 200 people help produce the opaque beer in cartons, PET bottles and returnable plastic bottles.

But she warned that this progress could be jeopardised by a reluctance to enforce Statutory Instrument No. 72 of 2012 – the Liquor Licensing (Intoxicating Liquor) (Quantities and Packaging) Regulation, 2012, which bans the production, transport and sale of alcohol in bulk containers.

The sale of such inferior opaque beer in illegal unregulated bulk packaging is a danger to public health and deprives the treasury of tax revenue, she said.

Ms Degroot, made the remarks during the commissioning of the new state-of-the-art plant in Sheki Sheki Road, Lusaka, opened by the Minister of Commerce.

“The future of Zambia and its economic development matters deeply to us. So, too, does the future of Zambia’s agricultural sector.
We look to the nation’s farmers to supply raw materials for the Chibuku we brew here. The same farmers are also, I believe, critically important to the future of Zambia and to its hopes for progress and prosperity,” said Ms Degroot.

With the company’s inputs of maize sourced from local farmers, Mrs Mwanakatwe was impressed by how the company was benefitting small-scale Zambian farmers and how the new factory would ultimately fit into Zambia’s growth story.

“There is no economy in the world that has developed without the full participation of the private sector. A viable and well-functioning private sector operating in a competitive environment will drive this country’s economy and create much-needed jobs and wealth for our people,” said the minister.

“I am aware that besides the direct and indirect jobs that this investment will create, there are also business opportunities for raw material suppliers, distributors and retailers. It is therefore gratifying to note that this new plant has a growing economic impact on local farmers through the creation of an integrated value chain which has a ripple effect on the livelihoods of maize and sorghum local farmers,” she added.

“I wish to commend National Breweries on the opening of the production plant and encourage other local companies to emulate them. We would like to see more local products on our shelves that will not be compromised in terms of taste and quality.”

Ignore Chishimba Kambwili on media regulation says UPND

UPND Central Province youth chairperson Milner Munakaampwe has called on Zambians to ignore Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili’s ‘rantings’ on his statement that the PF government intends to regulate the media.

In a statement Mr. Munakaampwe stated that Mr. Kambwili’s revelations that the PF government intends to regulate the media is an affront to the freedom of expression and a serious violation of the constitution.

“We call on all civilised Zambians to once more ignore Kambwili’s rantings, as he is known even within PF circles to just be talking nonsense. This is an eye opener as to how far the PF wish to limit our freedoms should they be given another mandate in the August elections,” Mr. Munakaampwe stated.

“Instead of ensuring that we have a supportive environment for a thriving and free media, Kambwili has plainly shown that he is an enemy of the fourth estate. Probably the only person who will listen to Kambwili is President Edgar Lungu himself, since he does nothing to stop Kambwili’s hate messages that seek to divide the country.”

Mr. Munakaampwe stated that civilised Zambians that understand democracy and the critical role the media plays must treat Kambwili’s new threats as another episode of comedy meant only for the theatre.

“Kambwili, along with the likes of Frank Bwalya and PF Deputy General Mumbi Phiri, are acting like hired guns bent on spreading hate messages, instead of promoting national unity and peace as their senior positions in the PF Government and leadership should demand,” Mr. Munakaampwe stated.

“What must be worrying to the nation though is that these are President Edgar Lungu’s close associates and advisors. This helps explain the kind of direction the country is now taking. These are the people on every radio and television station spreading derogatory remarks, hate speech, lies, libellous innuendos, and all sorts of accusations against other people, especially against the UPND President Hakainde Hichilema and other leaders.”

Mr. Munakaampwe stated that at a time such as this one when the country was facing numerous economic challenges, such as the high cost of living, rising price of farming inputs, powercuts that have pushed businesses out of operation and massive job losses, the nation was expectant of positive and more reassuring messages of hope from them (PF) but that what they were doing was the complete opposite by further depressing citizens.

He stated that in other countries, Mr. Kambwili, Mrs. Phiri and Mr. Bwalya would by now have been banned from speaking on public and media forums, and possibly even prosecuted for hate speech.

Mr. Munakaampwe stated that they were lucky that Zambians have somehow gotten used to treating their contemptuous messages as filling the gap for comedy.

“To imagine that these are among the people with presidential ambitions shows how cheap and how much of joke the country has been reduced to even at the level of the Republican President. For them, Zambia is a theatre and they are actors busy entertaining everyone at the expense of priority issues affecting the people,” stated Mr. Munakaampwe.

FIVE armed criminals in the early hours of yesterday attacked the Kasumbalesa Police Post and shot a police officer.

In a statement, Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga stated that criminals have also gone away with some money.

“We have a report in Chililabombwe of aggravated robbery which occurred yesterday April 7 at 02:30 hours in which five armed criminals attacked the Kasumbalesa Police Post and shot Constable George Mulwani,25, in the right thigh,” Ms. Katanga stated.

“Criminals stole an Ak 47 rifle serial number M 221364 by 19 rounds of ammunition. Criminals also stole 3 AK 47 magazines each containing 30 rounds.

Also stolen is prisoners money K1560, USD 95 and 125, 000 Congolese francs, keys for four impounded vehicles, a set of keys for an officer’s vehicle and three cell phones for officers who were on duty.”

Ms. Katanga stated that two officers were on duty; the victim and his colleague.

Ms. Katanga stated that the other three magazines were taken from the red box after criminals broke the lock.

“The number of criminals who attacked the station is not exactly known but two entered the station one armed but other 3 criminals were observing outside the station. The officers on duty has identified one of them to be a Congolese soldier,” stated Ms. Katanga.

Ndola man jailed for 25 years for killing his lover after she allegedly infected him with an STI

A 32 YEAR old man of Nkwazi township in Ndola has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour for beating his lover to death after he suspected her of having infected him with syphilis.

Before Ndola High court Judge Yvonne Chembe, was Kennedy Mwengwe, who was charged with murder but he was convicted of a lesser charge of manslaughter as there was no evidence on recorded on whether Mwengwe acted with malice aforethought in causing the death of his lover.

Particulars of the of offence were that Mwengwe,on November 19,2015,murdered Doreen Kangwa.

Ms Justice Chembe however, noted that Mwengwe kept on giving conflicting statements in his defence as he also stated that he beat his lover after she delayed in coming home and that he got upset after he saw her her with her former lover.

“After analyzing the evidence before me,i have noticed that the reason why Mwengwe killed his lover is because he suspected her of having infected him with Syphilis although he gave conflicting statements.”

“I have carefully considered the evidence from both the prosecution and the defence. It is not in dispute that Mwengwe and Ms Kangwa were in a relationship and that there were cohabiting. It is also not in dispute that Mwengwe assaulted the deceased as he did not deny it in his defence by stating that they fought over Ms Kangwa’s former lover and that she was the one who infected Mwengwe with an STI.But what is not clear was whether he used anything to kill the deceased as no one saw him do.Therefore,i find that the prosecution failed to prove the ingredient of malice aforethought. I therefore, find Mwengwe guilty of a lesser offence of manslaughter and i accordingly convict him.I hereby sentence you to 25years imprisonment with hard labour effective the date off your arrests,” Ms Justice Chembe said.

Ms Justice Chembe granted Mwengwe leave to appeal to the Supreme court within 14 days.

Defence counsel pleaded with the court to exercise leniency on Mwengwe as he was a first offender who was remorseful for having caused the death of his lover.

During trial, the court heard that Mwengwe and Ms Kangwa were lovers and that they stayed together, although during their stay,Ms Kangwa’s former lover only identified as Rodgers would visit her and this infuriated Mwengwe who resorted to beating her especially after he discovered that he was suffering from an STI which be blamed on Ms Kangwa as he thought she was the promiscuous one.

A SOUTH African consortium of companies, Edgy Nicollo Group, has shown interest in partnering with the Lusaka City Council in a pilot project to provide free wi-fi services to residents of Lusaka.

Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa, Emmanuel Mwamba last week led a delegation of eight members from Edgy Nicollo Group among them William Makgatho, the technical director and Gugulethu Gwamanda, the project director.

The delegation held talks with officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, led by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Amos Malupenga and Lusaka City Council officials led by the Town Clerk, Mr. Alex Mwansa, on their expression of interest to provide the service.

The Council will identify a service provider to help with the technical aspect of the project and once implemented, the wi-fi project will help the council brand its image, improve service provision and also enhance interaction with members of the public on the various services offered and on different issues affecting the community.

Mr. Malupenga said government appreciates initiatives such as the one being offered by y Nicollo Groupand will help in creating an enabling environment for Councils of effectively and efficiently provide services to the general membership.

“As government, these are the kind of projects we encourage because they keep councils in direct contact with people in the communities,” Mr. Malupenga.

Mr. Mwamba said he bought into the idea when he was approached by officials from Edgy Nicollo Group; especially on the aspect that the consortium has so far partnered with three cities in South Africa, among them Ekurhuleni Municipality who already have a sister-to-sister undertstanding with the Lusaka City Council.

“I was particularly excited when they I was approached by Edgy Nicollo Group that they have an understanding with the Lusaka City Council on a sister to sister basis and from what I have seen on what they have done with Ekurhuleni Municipality where service provision has been made so easy through use of wi-fi; so I decided to set up this appointment,” Mr. Mwamba said.

Mr. Mwansa said he was impressed with the free wi-fi service project offer by Edgy Nicollo Group because of the wonderful benefits that it was promising and advised the South African consortium to apply formally and the matter would go through the due process of application before Council can approve.

The Town Clerk said the free wi-fi service will also help the general public to electronically pay for various services provided by the local authority such as rates, ground rent, business, fire, marriage certificates, building plans, firearms, bill boards, liquor and public health eg restaurant operating licences; among others.

The Council will identify hotspot zones within the community for wi-fi service to make it easy for members of the communities to pay for services like what was pertaining at Lusaka Water and Sewerageg Company, Digital Satellite television (DStv) and others where clients can pay for bill electronically.

Wi-fi is a term for certain types of wireless local area networks (WLAN) and is widely used in businesses, agencies, schools, and homes as an alternative to a wired LAN.

Zambian projects to recieve funding by the queen’s young leaders programme

THREE projects from across Zambia are among a unique set of organisations to receive a Queen’s Young Leaders Programme Grant to support their work.

The grants have been awarded to ActionAid Zambia’s Firestarter Initiative, BongoHive and Restless Development and BBC Media Action, all of who are working to transform the lives of young people. The grants have been made to organisations in selected Commonwealth countries that can show they are doing brilliant work to help fulfil the aim of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme; to support youth led organisations that are harnessing the impact young people have in the communities around them.

ActionAid’s Firestarter Initiative will provide small grants to work with youth groups who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to receive training, mentoring and funding, to enable them to turn their ideas in to projects for change. BongoHive will provide a hub with office space, and practical business support for those starting their own businesses. Restless Development and BBC Media Action will train young people to help communities engage in democratic processes using a variety of media with a vision to build a better, stronger Zambia.

Dr Astrid Bonfield CBE, Chief Executive at The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust said: “These organisations exemplify exactly what The Queen’s Young Leader’s Programme stands for. They are pioneering opportunities for young people to learn new skills, enter employment and start their own businesses, giving them a genuine voice in their community. They are an excellent example of how young people can be at the heart of initiatives which enrich the lives of people within the Commonwealth.”

Caroline Elliot, Head of Programmes and Policy at ActionAid said: “ActionAid Zambia is thrilled to be awarded The Queen Young Leaders Grant to continue our work with young, vibrant youth organisations to support them to participate in decision making and ensure that decisions made are relevant to the needs of young people and reflect the innovation and creativity of them. Through this support, young people will be able to actively engage in a society that takes into account their needs.”

Mike Murray Business Incubation Lead at BongoHive says: “We have no doubt that this partnership will strengthen the breadth and depth of the entrepreneurial community in Lusaka and across Zambia. A larger number and a wider variety of start-ups and small businesses in Zambia leads to more jobs, greater household incomes, healthier people and communities, a broader based economy and tax base resulting in a more resilient country.”

At a time when the Commonwealth is home to the largest generation of young people in its history, The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme is supporting thousands of young people to make their visions of a better society a reality. Comprising two parts, between 2014-2018, the Programme will create a lasting legacy for Her Majesty The Queen through:

President Edgar Lungu to join 15 000+ farmers and agri experts expected at Agritech Expo in Chisamba this week

PRESIDENT Mr Edgar Lungu is this week expected to join some 15000 emerging to commercial farmers at the third Agritech Expo Zambia, taking place from 14-16 April in the agri-hub of Chisamba. More than 145 local and international farming technology and service providers will showcase their products in what is the largest agri-event of its kind in the region. The expo includes a German, Zimbabwean and livestock pavilion.

“We must commend the Zambia National Farmers’ Union for coming up with events like the Agritech Expo”, says Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, the Honourable Given Lubinda,”where farmers can meet, share experiences and information, as well as learn good agronomy tactics that can help them improve productivity. They say, if you want to walk fast, walk alone but if you want to walk far, walk together. I believe that when farmers meet at this year’s Expo they will be able to deal with their challenges.”
The Minister adds: “we need to increase productivity in agriculture, especially among small scale farmers. The vast majority of them produce between one and 2.5 metric tonnes of maize per hectare yet they have access to seeds that have a yield potential of over 10 metric tonnes per hectare. This is why small scale farmers are still trapped in poverty.”

ZNFU: showcasing Zambia’s agri industry

Dr Evelyn Nguleka, Zambia National Farmers Union President, owners of Agritech Expo Zambia, says news features at the event this year include an “Energy Park, designed to offer you innovation and cleaner energy solutions to help you wipe away your electricity outage blues and the ever increasing costs of energy. Our extended Livestock Zone is another must-see area, for you definitely need the right stock genetics and technologies to survive climate change-induced vagaries of weather.”

Agritech Expo Zambia will, for the first time, also feature a live irrigation centre pivot, a very critical feat as Zambian agriculture focuses and seeks to expand irrigated farming at all levels. Dr Nguleka says “the all new 4×4 Test Track is another feature that will finally help farmers decide which 4×4 work horse is best for their farm. We have also extended the SME Zone to make sure we bring in as many agro SMEs as possible. This is important to us as we strive to show case the Zambian agricultural industry in totality.”

Zambia’s farmers

A well-known Zambian commercial farmer Graham Rae, MD of Zambezi Ranching and Cropping Limited, says “agriculture can grow and supply the sub region but we need to (with the help of GOZ) reduce input costs. Zambia has to compete with subsidised imports and we believe that these should have tariffs applied to level the playing field. We understand that the consumer needs affordable food and with the correct government policies this can be achieved. We need to protect our markets and ensure our productivity increases.”
Grace Musonda is a Zambian teacher and farmer and another visitor at last year’s Agritech Expo Zambia. She teaches at the American International School of Lusaka and her farm is in Mansa. Says Grace: “my husband and I started with maize and also experimented on commercial cassava growing briefly. In the meantime we had also started with a small herd of cattle. After five years of maize growing, especially at a distance we have just discovered that we should have put all the resources in cattle, it works better for us”.

She continues: “women can play a role in agriculture by getting involved either as partner farmers with their husbands or going it solo. Women can also play a very important role in giving their children a positive view of agriculture. Some women don’t like to get involved in farming because they think it’s a dirty work or they just think that it’s for men only and yet it is actually satisfying.”

Agri industry challenges and support

Zanaco (Zambia National Commercial Bank), as returning exclusive diamond sponsor, heads up an impressive list of local and global agri suppliers that will be at Agritech Expo Zambia at the GART Research Centre in Chisamba. Other big names in the farming sector that are supporting the event include AFGRI, John Deere and JCB, who are platinum sponsors, and Action Auto, Livestock Services, SARO and Zamseed who are all gold sponsors.

The Managing Director of Zanaco, Bruce Dick, says of Agritech Expo: “this is one networking opportunity that brings together farmers throughout the agricultural value chain and exchange ideas on how best to improve yields. It’s also an opportunity for farmers/vendors/bankers to start sustainable business relationships.”

Regarding the challenges faced by Zambia’s agricultural sector, including the drought, Wayne Wiid, Executive Country Manager, AFGRI, says “it isn’t only the drought which is posing a major challenge for the farmers. High interest rates, the strengthening of the US$ and electricity issues are also contributing to the current woes of the farmers. Farming is cyclic and we will have to ‘ride this downfall out’, perseverance is key.”

He adds: “it isn’t all doom and gloom, there are some positives. The open border policy of the government on the sale of commodities is a massive boost for the economy.”

School benefits from Outreach Programme

In the meantime, some 610 learners and 17 teachers at the Golden Valley Basic School in Chisamba, Zambia are reaping the benefits of the Agritech Expo Outreach Programme. The school is situated on the GART research farm where the annual Agritech Expo takes place, and the event organisers decided to raise funds to assist the school with much needed infrastructure upgrades, equipment supplies and management of the school’s farm.

Agritech Expo is organised by Spintelligent, leading Cape Town-based trade exhibition and conference organiser, and the African office of Clarion Events Ltd, based in the UK. The event is owned by the Zambia National Farmers Union.

Our time to take back and to lead this country has come, says Muchemwa Robert Sichone

“Our time to take back and lead this Country has come,” Muchemwa Robert Sichone who is the son to the Late Lucy Banda Sichone, a lawyer, Human Rights Activist and Educator has said. Muchemwa, who is also aspiring to stand in the District of Kalulushi for the position of Executive Mayor on the UPND ticket was reacting to the reasons given by the Norwegian Ambassador to Zambia, Arve Ofstad for closing the Norwegian Embassy in Zambia. Ambassador Ofstad is reported to have said, “It is pointless to keep funding a Country that can’t manage its own resources.”

Speaking shortly after he attended a Church Service at the Union Baptist Church at Kafubu Depot, in Chati Ward within Kalulushi District on Sunday, Sichone said it was not right for young people to continue standing by the side lines when it had become abundantly clear that our leaders today had failed to properly manage the Country.

“It is sad when someone else has to point out something, anything about our own Country, when we, the custodians of it remain quiet about the many issues that are affecting our Country. The state of this nation has deteriorated at whichever level you look at it and that is why I think the Norwegian Ambassador did not even go far enough because he limited his statement to financial resource management only. I could add to that by saying that Zambia is blessed with abundant natural resources as well. Off the top of my head, Zambia, has a total land area of 75 million hectares of which approximately 58% or 42 million hectares has a very high potential for agricultural production. When it comes to minerals it is Africa’s largest producer of Copper and Cobalt but it also has an abundance of other minerals like gold, emerald and so on that are being mined commercially at the moment. It currently holds approximately 35% of Southern Africa’s water and with this tropical climate has sunlight throughout the year. So where are we going wrong? Over the years one thing has become very clear to me and that is, our leaders have completely failed to manage and harness the full potential of all our resources effectively for the benefit of every Zambia.”

Muchemwa Sichone bemoaned the attitude of young people today who do not want to actively participate in Politics even though they are the ones that are greatly affected by the challenges that the country is facing today.

“Let me be clear. If you are between 18 and 50 years old you are a young person and should be taking a very active interest in what is going on politically in Zambia because we did not get here by accident. Zig Ziglar says, ‘You are where you are because that is exactly where you want to be.’ So it is unfortunate that I am a young person and have to admit this but it is our complacency or indifference to public affairs as young people that is the biggest challenge to national development. However, it is not too late and so we cannot shirk from this fight because this is our fight. We have an obligation to our children in the same way that the men and women that liberated this country felt obligated to make the sacrifices that they made in order for us to enjoy the freedom that we are supposed to be enjoying today. Where is our freedom, fifty one years and six months after we raised our own flag, on our own soil in a Country that we could finally call our own? Where is it? Do we really want to be remember as that generation that did not do anything when this Country needed us the most? It is almost as if Colonialism never left but changed colour because you do not have to go very far to see how economically segregated our society is. The disparity of livelihoods in the communities we live in is disheartening to say the very least. We should be ashamed because it says a lot about a people that took this beautiful thing called independence and incarcerated it, in poverty, corruption as well as mismanagement of public and natural resources. This cannot go on!”

He added that he was now entering active Politics to not only finish what his mother started but to ensure that Politics in Zambia evolved and became more issue based with a focus on solving the pertinent problems that are affecting Zambians.

“You see most men wanted to grow up to be like their fathers. I am proudly one of a few men that wanted to grow up to be like my mother. Lucy was a very courageous, very selfless human being. Even in death she is by far one the greatest political leaders Zambia has ever had and so her legacy has been staring me in the face for a very long time as if to remind me that she is still waiting for me at the podium of greatness. She was “a voice of conscience” and “a great daughter of the nation.” She is a legend…she is my mother…and she will forever be my greatest source of motivation as well as inspiration. I need to finish what she started.

Secondly I am also personally inspired by the life story of Hakainde Hichelema. I believe it is a story that has to be told because it is a testimony about overcoming adversity, perseverance and hard work. At many levels he has managed to remove the IMP to make impossible, possible and that is why I strongly support the UPND policies of free education and an agricultural based economy that will make this country great again. Let us not be misled. All these things are possible because the resources to ensure that we diversify, educate and grow our economy are there and all we need is selfless, young, energetic leadership with a vision to correctly manage them and drive this country forward.

Personally I have decided to start at local Government level because that is where the people are. Kalulushi for example has many advantages on the Copperbelt because it is probably the only District that has preserved most of its former infrastructure from the time the district was largely supported by the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. Therefore my vision for Kalulushi is to restore, rebuild and then re-plan the entire district so that we strategically implement an unprecedented development agenda that will raise the profile of the district to international standards. I would like to transform Kalulushi into the epicentre of the Copperbelt. I have already outlined my priority areas for development and these are Water, Energy, Health, Education, Sport, Innovation, Industry and Security.

This means that among other things, Kalulushi will become the first load shedding free district in the Country that will also have fresh, clean drinking water running from its taps 24/7. I also intend to attract investment in Health as well as Education which will see this District house some of the best schools and hospitals within the Country in order to cultivate a medical as well as academic tourist industry. As a city we will also invest in technology as well as establish adequate infrastructure that will be able to support the mines as wells various industries. I also intend to make Kalulushi a crime free, zero crime district which will make it an ideal place to invest in property as well as raise a family. Children and our youth will be kept busy because we will endeavour to build the largest Youth, Sport Development Centre in the Country. Now all these things may not happen in 90 days but believe you me they will and can happen because we will deliberately and properly make use of all the resources available to us to make this happen. If Peter walked on water…well…so can I. We just have to have a little more faith and a lot of hope. Barak Obama famously said, ‘Hope is not blind optimism. It’s not ignoring the enormity of the task ahead, or the roadblocks that stand in our path. It’s not sitting on the side lines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it.’

I am ready to work and fight for Kalulushi and Zambia. Finally allow me to end with a quote from our founding father Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda who said, ‘”They have banned the great name of Zambia, but the greater name of freedom now is spiritual. It is beyond their reach and so they cannot ban it…Africa, our mother Africa, must be free, and it has fallen to our lot to free this part. Be of good cheer, we are just beginning.’

So indeed the greater name of freedom is now spiritual. Zambia will be free and I am just beginning and I would encourage whoever reads or sees this to do the same.

A LUSAKA business man has begged the Kanyama Local Court to dissolve his one year marriage, saying he caught his wife having sex with the landlord.

This is in case which Brian Sikolo, 29, sued his wife Maureen Sikolo, 25, for divorce. Bride price was not paid. The couple have no child together.

Brian, a security guard said on March 11, he saw his landlord whom described as Chanda together with his wife heading towards his house around 23:35 hours and watched how his friend started undressing his wife and started having sex.

He said on that fateful day, he got permission from work because he was not feeling too well.

Further, Brian said he never wanted to disturb the duo because he wouldn’t have proper evidence in court adding that he wanted to film the entire scene, hence approaching them after they had finished having sex.

But Maureen who could not hold back her tears admitted the claim and begged her husband to forgive her. “I was seduced by our landlord, “she claimed.

The defendant told the court that she agreed to sleep with Mr Chanda because he had promise her that she would stop paying monthly rentals.

Passing judgment, the court dismissed claim for divorce because bride price was not paid.

A HUSBAND of Lusaka has dragged his wife to court for adultery, saying he caught her deeply engaged in sexual intercourse right in their matrimonial bed.

This is in a case which Jack Zulu, 28, of Kanyama township sued his wife Angela Zulu, 25, of the same township for adultery.

While explaining his ordeal with the wife in the Chawama local courtroom, Jack said he caught his wife deeply engaged in sexual intercourse right in his house adding that he was furious over Angela’s sex escapades.

“On several occasions, I’ve found condoms in my wife’s bag and she has failed to give me a satisfactory explanation about how she came about it,” he said.

“I was mad, but Angela quickly pleaded with me, promising not to do it again. Though I forgave her; she seems to be deep rooted in adultery and that’s the more reason why we are here so that the court talks about our marriage,” he said.

He added that elders are now tired talking about their marriage.

But Angela who did not deny the allegations levied against her, she said, “There is no more love between I and my husband. The problem is that he calls me a prostitute” she said.

“The challenge we have in our house is that my husband has been starving sexually and I’m a human being too; I have feelings,” she said.

And when court asked the couple when they last had sex, Angela said she could not remember the time slept together. “My husband likes telling me that I’m a finished woman who can’t even arouse his manhood,” he said.

Passing judgment, the court reconciled the couple.

Macky 2 and Zambian Breweries tackle underage drinking

THE dangers of under-age drinking were highlighted last week when award-winning artiste Macky 2 teamed up with Zambian Breweries to advance the company’s underage drinking campaign in secondary schools.

Macky 2 spent yesterday afternoon at SOS Children’s Village in Lusaka speaking to secondary school pupils about the problem alongside representatives from Zambian Breweries and the National Road Safety Foundation, who have partnered to promote awareness on the dangers of under-age drinking amongst the youths.

“Underage drinking is a problem we are facing as a country and as someone who is passionate about seeing the youths prosper and do something with their lives, I feel it’s a great initiative and I, personally as an artist, believe that with the influence that I have comes great responsibility and it is my responsibility to take part in activities like this,” said the Lolo-lolo hit singer.

The move was to push forward with the brewery’s campaign to increase awareness of the problem of underage drinking, and is in line with the company’s Sustainable development strategy (Prosper) through which it seeks to achieve, among other things, moderate and responsible drinking.

“As Zambian Breweries and National Breweries, we are committed to this campaign to encourage responsible drinking among those of legal age and to discourage underage consumption of alcohol,” said Director of Corporate Affairs Ezekiel Sekele.

The company has embarked on a vigorous campaign against irresponsible drinking, particularly among the youth, and the negative vices associated with it.

In promoting responsible alcohol consumption among consumers, Zambian Breweries has also partnered with the Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the National Road Safety Foundation, in the enforcement of existing legislation on drinking and driving.

South African firm offers employment to two Zambian interns

THE five University of Zambia engineering graduates who were on a Zambian High Commission-arranged apprenticeship programme with a South African – based company have successfully completed their training and will return to Zambia this week.

The South African company, Ubun2 Group of Companies, has since offered permanent employment to two of the candidates for their outstanding performance during the programme, while the remaining three would be taken on once the company commences its operations in Zambia.

The five who recently graduated in civil and mechanical engineering from the University of Zambia arrived in Johannesburg on January 15 this year and were met in Pretoria and handed over to Ubun2 Group, by Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency, Mr. Emmanuel Mwamba.

The five, Alice Munthali, Ricky Siamatu, Enoch Sichone, Wilson Kapungwe and Charles Silungwe, were attached for a three-month period to Ubun2 Group’s operations situated in Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.

Arrangements for the engagement of Enoch Sichone as an employee of Ubun2 Group of Companies have been concluded while those for the second candidate are still progressing. Mr. Sichone will be returning to South Africa in the next two weeks to take up his position.
And Government has commended Ubun2 Group for what it has termed as a rare initiative, if not the first, in which a company that has not yet made not even a penny in profits has opted to spend its own money to empower Zambians.

Charge D’ Affaires at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa, Ms. Philomena Kachesa said Zambia has had several companies, owned by both local and foreign investors who have been operating in Zambia for many years and have made huge profits but have never spent anything, even under the ambit of corporate social responsibility.

Ms. Kachesa was speaking at the certificate presentation and handover ceremony of the five candidates back to the Zambian Government which was held at the High Commission in Pretoria this morning.

“Moving forward, I think as Government, we will be assured of a win-win situation if we choose to work with companies such as Ubun2 Group. They have indeed shown the way and it is our hope as Government that other investors as well as potential investors will emulate them. As Government, we thank you so much for this gesture as it will greatly contribute to skills transfer of the latest technologies into Zambia,” Ms. Kachesa said.

She hoped that the five found the programme valuable and had acquired skills that they would put to use for the benefit of Zambia.
She urged Ubun2 Group of companies to ensure that the candidates formed their staff compliment when the company finally moved to set up operations in Zambia.

Ms. Kachesa also called on young Zambians to strive to be self-reliant by creating their own employment as opposed to waiting to find be employed.

“I wish to take this opportunity to make a call that it is high time Zambian graduates at both secondary and tertiary level stopped looking at education as something that should prepare them to be employees, but should look at education as something that should arm them with the capabilities to be able to stand on their own and generate income.”

“We should strive to be employers of others as we go through our education process. That is the only way we will effectively contribute to the growth of our economy in this environment which we all know to have very few job opportunities,” Ms. Kachesa said.
And Ubun2 Group of Companies Director of Corporate Affairs, Apostle Emmanuel Nkhoma said his company was excited that the apprenticeship programme, conducted over a period of 90 days of practical work, had been successfully completed.

Apostle Nkhoma said the performance of the five participants was impressive to a point where the company would invite another group from Zambia through the High Commission.

“Our company wishes to continue with this initiative and commitment of offering this kind of exchange programmes to the emerging engineers in Zambia as part of our contribution to Africa’s national development,” Apostle Nkhoma said.

He said Ubun2 would have loved to take on all the five candidates as permanent employees or on a longer apprenticeship period had it not been for the structure of the South African Immigration and Employment laws.

“However, not all is lost as our intention is to re-unite with all those we train from Zambia when we finally get our operations into that country.”

The group was divided into two with Mechanical Engineers based in Durban while Civil Engineers were in Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu-Natal. The Mechanical Engineers were taken through building and assembling stone crushing equipment, drawings and plant planning, mechanical fittings, and grinding and cutting operations. Those on the Civil Engineering side were involved in supervising and setting out bulk earth works; setting out and laying of sewer, storm water and water pipes; setting out and constructing returning walls; supervising road layer works, and basic site surveying.

Speaking on behalf of the group in a vote of thanks, Enoch Sichone said the five have acquired skills that will enable them effectively contribute to Zambia’s Development.

“None of us ever imagined such an opportunity. We have been inspired by the culture we were associated with over the last three months where people have made it to being prominent even when they were nothing before. We thank the Government of Zambia for facilitating this programme and we feel fortunate to be associated with a company that has clearly demonstrated that it is not after ripping Zambia of its resources but to empower the people,” Mr. Sichone said.
